About the Expert

W. Gary Wilson is Vice President of Hall & Wilson LLC., and has over 40 years of experience in environmental compliance management, environmental management systems (EMS), environmental performance measurement and communication, management system auditing, and multimedia site investigations under CERCLA. He has an undergraduate degree in Chemistry and a JD in law. He is a registered attorney (retired) in Massachusetts.

Gary is past-chair of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO Technical Committee (TC) 207, was the international Chair of ISO TC 207 Working Group 4, which developed the guidance standard on Environmental Communication (ISO 14063), and was a member of the TC 207 Chairman’s Advisory Group. He also worked as a U.S .expert on the TC 207 subcommittee that developed the international guidance standard on environmental performance indicators (ISO 14031).

Gary has authored numerous articles on environmental management topics, co-authored a book on ISO 14001 for  business executives, titled The ISO 14000 Answer Book: Environmental Management for the World Market (John Wiley & Sons, 1997), and a book for business and environmental professionals seeking to understand the latest trends and tools in the evolving field of environmental management, titled Sustaining Environmental Management Success: Best Business Practices of Industry Leaders (John Wiley & Sons, 1999), which examines techniques used by progressive companies from around the world to develop and implement strategic environmental planning.

He became involved in EMS standards development in 1994 because he felt the EMS approach provided better overall management of the environmental aspects of a company than command-and-control regulations alone. The development of international standards help ensure continuity of approach in a global marketplace. He advises persons just getting into standards development to participate in a broad range of issues and standards at the TAG level, since the standards in the ISO 14000 family are interrelated.

In addition to his work in environmental management and with standards development, Gary enjoys fishing, golfing, HO trains, and spending time with his grandchildren.
